This experience left me discouraged, and in search of a telescope that was designed for my astrophotography needs. Astro Publishing Ltd, registered as a limited company in England and Wales under company number: 12023963. While I highly recommend this scope, I would encourage that if you can afford the extra 300 USD, the 102mm version is a much better buy and the issues I’ve pointed out with this scope aren’t present on the larger model. M45 – The Pleiades Cluster. While the image is cropped, you can see some comatic aberration in the corners and the focus isn’t as sharp at the edge of the field of view as the center compared to my other images that have a perfectly flat field and are free of all coma. The ES 80mm F/6 OTA is the same unit as the Meade 5000 and a few others. Be it with a DSLR or my lunar imager (ZWO ASI120MC-S), it delivers incredible images and reveals subtle detail that only my larger 8 SCT can come close to matching. The Explore Scientific ED80 Essential Edition is a value oriented member of the 80mm apochromatic refractor class priced only slightly higher than competing doublet refractors. This design virtually eliminates chromatic aberration and delivers razor-sharp, high-contrast images with excellent colour. Its specs are quite impressive. None of these issues are serious or cause any real problem. It’s also extremely versatile, able to capture wide-field views spanning several degrees while also providing the high power punch to tease out lunar and planetary detail and split close double stars…" Focal Length: 480mm These things just could have been done better. While a very basic package, it contains everything you need except an eyepiece. The only thing you’ll be missing out on with a small telescope of this size is the visual observing power and increased magnification that comes with an instrument with a larger aperture. When the very first frame appeared on the back of my DSLR display screen, my jaw hit the floor. Views of the moon are clear with great contrast and no chromatic aberration at the edges, even at advanced stages when the moon is very bright. I couldn’t believe how precise I could focus the stars using the heavy-duty dual-speed 2″ focuser. Collimation of such an instrument is a delicate task that’s not easily achieved. 100 minutes of exposure time with a Nikon D5100, First shot of M31 with my ES ED80. A common question I get is about the finderscope bracket on the Explore Scientific ED80. After a quick adjustment using Sirius as my alignment and focus star, the illuminated reticle finder scope was a pleasure to use and to center my target in the frame. Genuine ED glass from Hoya Japan is used on all ED APO Triplets at Explore. It is solidly built, has a smooth 10:1 focuser, an illuminated 8x50 erect image finder and comes with an impressive case and 2” 99% diagonal. If you have to buy one, buy an Explore Scientific model (preferably a right angle finder) vs a Meade, as the ES finder is of significantly higher quality than anything Meade has to offer. Rather than attaching a separate bracket to hold this autoguiding telescope, I simply use the existing bracket that was designed to house the finderscope on the ED80. This combination of glass, lenses, and coatings virtually eliminates chromatic and spherical aberrations for clear and bright images without distortion … Focal Ratio: f/6. Without having the second 10:1 knob, I feel precise focusing would be nearly impossible. None of these will impact the user significantly, but they do need to be pointed out. Deep sky objects within its reach show fantastic contrast. The faster f/6 optics of this triplet design offer advantages in terms of both physical size and the potential field of view. The real reason I decided on this telescope was its superb photography potential. Shooting the moon with my Explore Scientific ED80 and Nikon D750 on my Celestron AVX. The ED80 80mm f/6 Essential Apochromatic ED Triplet Refractor Telescope from Explore Scientific features a triplet apochromatic lens system with Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass and Explore Scientific's proprietary anti-reflection EMD fully multicoated optics.
