C. F. Martin & Co. debuted a new and improved 16 Series at the Summer NAMM show in Nashville, Tennessee, featuring acoustic-electric models based around rosewood guitars with spruce tops, beginning with four new or improved models: the D-16E, GPC-16E, 000-16E, and 00-16E. Balance Before Boom The word “cannon” is often used to describe coveted prewar and modern high-end Martin dreadnoughts. While it’s not a household name as far as tonewoods go, sycamore grows abundantly across the United States and falls somewhere between mahogany and maple when it comes to density and mahogany’s dark and maple’s bright tonality. This tonality is blended with the dry signal via a thumbwheel control inside the treble side of the soundhole. With subtly unique styling, the D-16E is classic Martin in every sense and full of fresh ideas, too. The D-16E is a Dreadnought, with a 000 depth, constructed of a Sitka spruce top and sycamore back and sides. Silver binding isn’t the only 16-series design departure. Cons: Martin & CO., Inc.,  All Rights Reserved | Privacy Policy. Copious care has been taken with the frets, too, which are perfectly crowned and polished. Cool styling deviations from Martin norms. High-quality electronics. Read the review: http://bit.ly/MartinD-16E I’ll admit I was just a little taken aback when I first removed Martin’s new D-16E from its hardshell case. It features silver binding and heelcap, a multi-stripe orange top inlay and rosette, an ebony bridge, a silver bound ebony fingerboard with mother-of-pearl diamonds and squares inlay and Fishman® Matrix VT Enhance electronics. Some dreadnoughts can be too bass-heavy, but that’s not the case with this guitar. The Martin D-16E 16 Series Dreadnought model is crafted with satin-finished ovangkol back and sides for resonant sound with deep bass and rich overtones. But what it lacks in heavy impact—a tone quirk that might be related to the shallower body and the sycamore back and sides—it makes up for in clarity and balance. Ovangkol can vary both in color and grain complexity for a unique look. The guitar isn’t trimmed with the traditional tortoise or herringbone binding. All Rights Reserved It’s got a lean and uncluttered sound and gracefully balances overtones and fundamentals, which works well for a wide range of styles. Martin DC-16E Guitar This acoustic-electric cutaway Dreadnought, with a 000 depth, is crafted with a Sitka spruce top and sycamore back and sides. Whether in standard tuning, open G, or open D, the D-16E is great for strumming. The gloss finish is perfect. The dreadnought-sized body is shallower than a classic Martin dread’—using 000 body depth dimensions instead. Your Pedalboards 2020: Part Deux, 1. Slightly less responsive than some high-end Martin guitars. #mc_embed_signup{background:#fff; clear:left; font:14px Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; width:100%;} ©2020 C.F. Martin & Company D-16E It’s built around a Sitka spruce top, but the back and sides are sycamore. Though I had to dig in a little more with the pick-hand fingers on the D-16E to generate the same snap that I would on, say, a Martin OM-28, this dreadnought is still great for fingerpicking. This acoustic-electric cutaway Dreadnought, with a 000 depth, is crafted with a Sitka spruce top and sycamore back and sides. Yet it only takes a few strums and leads to hear that the spruce-and-sycamore D-16E maintains the classic Martin tone pedigree—strong in the bass frequencies and full of thump. The D-16E might cost a bit less than its 18- and 28-series counterparts, but it’s no less nicely built than other high-end Martins I’ve played recently. The choice of homegrown sycamore for the dreadnought models is an unusual move, but one that could prove more popular in the future in terms of sustainability. Pros: The D-16E’s responsiveness isn’t exactly that explosive. Hooked: Kenny Wayne Shepherd on Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", 4. It features silver binding and heelcap, an ebony bridge and a silver bound ebony fingerboard with mother-of-pearl diamonds and squares inlay. The craftsmanship is meticulous, to say the least, both inside and outside of the box. The sycamore on the review model is attractive, too—with a wavy grain pattern and a rich brown coloring. New Nazareth Boogie This pickup-and-preamp system does away with the plastic block plate typically mounted on the upper bout in favor of volume and tone controls tucked inside the bass side of the soundhole. MARTIN CLEARANCE SALE! From Martin: Americana Series D-16E – The D-16E is a Dreadnought, with a 000 depth, constructed of a Sitka spruce top and sycamore back and sides. The D-16E is outfitted with bridge plate-mounted Fishman Matrix VT Enhance electronics. The sound of this Martin dreadnought, however, is 100% serious, ringing out your musical message with the warm, full tone and robust projection of sycamore topped with Sitka spruce. Cascading arpeggios in DADGAD sound particularly rich on the D-16E, though ringing open tunings with lots of octave overtones can make the D-16E feel just a little buttoned-up.
